529 Job Losses, More to Come Due to EPA
Do regulations cause job loss? Yes, they most certainly do. The EPA has new mercury and air toxic standards known as mats. Due to this new regulation, FirstEnergy is forced to close down six of their coal fired power plants because they did not meet the new standard set by the EPA.
"James Lash, head of the company's generation unit, indicated that a review of the company's coal-fired plants determined it would not be cost-effective to get the older ones into compliance with environmental regulations the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced in December." The Associated Press found that there would be more than 32 power plants (mostly coal) that will be forced to shut down. These plants generate enough electricity to power 22 million households. So this regulation = thousands of job losses and higher electricity costs. Only a Liberal would approve of this in the recession we are in. |
