Disrespect of the US Flag at the Jumah DNC Event for Islam

A Muslim leader signaled the alarm about the Jumah at DNC event:
A quick Google search by the DNC would have shown them that Hough and Wahhaj are leaders in the separatist American Islamist movement.
But instead of canceling the event, the DNC just removed it from their schedule.
The Jumah event was removed from the DNC web site calendar, and there is no reference at all to the event.
But the event did take place and there was one man the conservative blogs (gateway pundit, macsmind, patriot update) are lighting up about. He was wearing what appears to be a torn and tattered symbolic representation of the US flag around his neck.
Upon closer review, you can see that this is not really the US flag, it is plaid.
But the user Rock from The Gateway Pundit pointed out:
May not be a real American Flag, but you can bet it was worn for the shock value, and offensive nature, and if called on it ... would have hid behind “but it’s not a real flag”.
Part of me wants to play devil's advocate. Could it be possible that he wore it because he loves the USA and not because he wanted to disrespect the country? Macsmind disagrees. He says the way it is draped is a sign of submission.
